As a driver for innovation and growth in the world economy, the process industry is facing profound changes: The ongoing discussions around “Industry 4.0” indicate just what challenges processing efficiency is going to have to face. At Achema 2015, Beckhoff, the specialist for PC-based control technology, will be addressing these with targeted support. First, in the area of process analysis, Beckhoff offers open standard hardware plus proven software protocols to ensure secure data transmission all the way from the sensor to the Cloud. Second, there are numerous components for measurement, control and process technology, all complying with the ATEX Directive 94/9/EC. And third, there is the linear transport system XTS for optimum-efficiency packaging machines – especially for the pharmaceutical industry.

A substitute for DCS: Embedded PC as a universal data collector

With its range Embedded PCs, Beckhoff offers scalable miniaturised PC technology as a substitute for conventional distributed control systems. Bus Terminals can be directly connected to interface with all usual sensors and actuators. These Embedded PCs can be used to address compact drive units, control valves and proportional valves. PC-based control technology links field level and Big Data

With PC-based control technology, Beckhoff provides the ideal foundation for the acquisition of process or consumption data and also Smart Metering. Acquired at the field level in networked systems and buildings, such process data can be made available to the Cloud. These large amounts of data (“Big Data”) are used by higher-level analysis services for evaluation, logging, and subsequent optimisation or failure analysis. Data acquisition at the field level is easy through direct sensor connection to the Beckhoff I/O Terminals or other fieldbus and subsystem terminals.

TwinCAT automation software supports all commonly used communication protocols. Secure communications, e.g. for data analysis or sending operating status values to the Cloud, is provided using OPC UA. This vendor-independent, Ethernet and web-based communication standard can be seamlessly integrated into MES and DCS concepts.
