PC-based Control: the universal control solution for shipbuilding
At the SMM 2014 trade fair, which takes place from 9 to 12 September in Hamburg, Germany, Beckhoff will present its universal automation technology, covering a wide range of uses in shipbuilding. Due to its openness, modularity and scalability, PC-based control technology is suitable for control tasks in the most diverse areas, ranging from engine room monitoring and engine management to cooling, from the pumping of fluids and the control and cleaning of ballast water tanks to the supply and distribution of electrical power and the control of individual cabins on passenger ships, or for the loading and unloading of freighters. The universality of control technology from Beckhoff, its open interfaces and the broad support of communication standards provide the basic capabilities for a cost-efficient and flexible implementation of the diverse Automation tasks in shipbuilding using an integrated solution.

One of the items on which the trade show presentation will focus is the CX5100 Embedded PC series. The new series provides compact, DIN rail-mountable control devices with up to four processor cores. They deliver multi-core technology in controllers of the mid-range performance class at a lower price range, allowing demanding applications, like for example Condition Monitoring, to be computed on a separate core. The CPU, based on the latest Intel® Atom™ generation, offers sufficient processing power to implement PLC and Motion Control applications with and without visualisation. The performance of the new Embedded PCs can be leveraged very effectively since the latest generation Beckhoff TwinCAT 3 automation software offers support multi-core technology.

An optimum price-performance ratio also distinguishes the CP6606 ‘Economy’ Panel PC, which combines controller and display in one compact unit. It is designed as a fanless built-in device with a 7-inch touch display, power-saving 1 GHz ARM Cortex™-A8 CPU and 1 GB DDR3-RAM memory and can be used for many different applications in shipbuilding. With its elegant design the CP6606 is also ideally suited for use in the price-sensitive segment of single-room control in cruise-ship cabins.
